News design
Origins
I launched this visual storytelling series in 2023, inspired by Charles Apple's Further Review page for The (Spokane, Wash.) Spokesman-Review. Each page dives deep into a piece of fascinating history, intriguing art or captivating science with a Berkshire angle. After monthly debuts, the pages have become an occasional part of my Eagle work, and have won multiple awards from the New England Newspaper & Press Association.
Other work
First below:Below left: I worked with Diversions section editors and Diamondback Lab web producers to envision and plan a classic "creature feature" theme, as well as page architecture and video design, then worked with photographer Tom Hausman to prepare and style items for the photoshoot.
Second below:Below right: This non-editorial page explained to The Eagle's audience what decisions the company was making in order to weather the early-COVID-19 pandemic. The design distilled the company's brand identity in a way news pages often do not, while still valuing the clarity and directness appropriate for the topic.
Third below:Bottom: This personal project is a book design for a family Haggadah, which is used during the Passover Seder. Unlike my usual work under an established style, I was able to delve deeper into typography (in both the Latin and Hebrew alphabets), color and layout as I established a visual identity that was formal but accessible. Organizing pages into a logical flow for the prescribed order of events was a unique challenge. In collaboration with Pittsfield-based Qualprint, I was able to shepherd this project through all the steps from idea to finished print product.
